Walter Jr., dat is een internationale naam met faam en een ensemble van jong Belgisch jazztalent. Voor deze editie wordt Jon Irabagon de internationale coach. Jon werkt twee dagen met de klas vrije improvisatie van Frederik Leroux aan het Conservatorium Antwerpen. 's Avonds speelt deze jonge band een openingsset en warmt zo het podium op voor Rebellion(s).

We're happy to have them at Werkplaats Walter as part of new conspiricies with the Brussels Museum of Resistance: Rebellion(s) is the brainchild of saxophonists Sylvain Rifflet and Jon Irabagon. Friends since 1998, Rifflet and Irabagon previously collaborated across the Atlantic Ocean by arranging over a dozen compositions by Moondog for a new ensemble that featured children's choir, music boxes and a stellar ensemble of new music and improvisatory musicians. Their current and timely project, Rebellion(s), combines cutting edge writing and improvising with civic-minded speeches dealing with equality, women's suffrage, racism, gun control, work conditions and several other topics of debate. The music is both a call-to-action as well as inspirational and challenging. The noncompromising nature of the speeches and compositions promises a concert filled with excitement and unexpected directions.

Het is een antioorlogsstuk, vol emoties en schitterende muziek.

ZINNEKELEKH
De naam Zinnekelekh is een Jiddische vertaling van "Zinneke", een woord dat "bastaard" betekent in het traditionele Brussels dialect. En het is deze mix waar dit ensemble voor staat - een groep met zowel Jiddische als Brusselse roots en met een verrassende culturele verscheidenheid. Joods en niet-Joods, Franstalig-Nederlands-Anglofoon-Andalousisch-Russisch... Verenigd door de liefde voor klezmermuziek, en met een ruime mix van muzikale achtergronden, bestaat de groep uit verschillende instrumenten die aanwezig zijn in een traditionele klezmer 'kapelye': violen, accordeon, klarinet, trompet, evenals een gitaar en cello. Zinnekelekh put haar repertoire uit de traditionele Joodse feestmuziek die in Oost-Europa en in de Balkan werd gespeeld. Met hun akoestische sound met af en toe een vleugje Jiddisch, nodigt hun spontane stijl genereus uit ten dans.

Voortbouwend op de ervaring met het Vansina Orchestra uit 2014 zoekt Vansina opnieuw de orkestrale klanken op. De blazers maken deze keer plaats voor een strijkersensemble, de drums moeten plaats delen met een heuse batterij percussionisten. De muzikale reus Magic Malik sluit opnieuw mee de rangen.

Het concert wordt live opgenomen, om 20.30 uur gaan de deuren dan ook dicht.

Kan je er niet bij zijn in Walter? Dan hoor je BVO part II op zaterdag 6 mei ook in De Singer, Rijkevorsel.

In 2023 zet Walter in op de ondersteuning van residenten en hun plannen. Via een open call selecteerden we huisresidenten, maar we helpen ook bij het realiseren van wilde plannen en ambitieuze projecten van anderen. Walter is al lang enthousiast over het parcours van Hans Beckers. Blij om hem een week lang te kunnen ondersteunen in het verdere maakwerk rond La Floresta. Afsluiten doet Hans met een intiem toonmoment.

With this duo Jeroen Van Herzeele opens another chapter in his musical research. Using different settings, Jeroen and Stéphane experience live music in an interactive context, with multiple horns (tenor and soprano), overdubs, modular synths, drums and electronics, exhilarating dialogues around themes and metrics.

Being a big fan of his early 90s work with Stéphane and Peter Hertmans on the cd ‘At the Crossroads’ we’re extremely happy and excited with this new project on Walter's stage.


yoshihide/pitsiokos
Turntablist/guitarist Otomo Yoshihide, one of the most important members of the Japanese experimental/avant-garde, joins the ever genre-evading alto saxophonist/composer Chris Pitsiokos, who played a raving soloset at Walter last year. The prodigious shared vocabulary of the two spans the gamut between noise, free jazz, musique concrete, and scronk. Indeed, whatever sounds lurk behind the next corner are always unknown, but paradoxically feel inevitable once they have happened. We're honoured to have this duo as only Belgian venue on their tour schedule.

Jordi Grognard played one of the first concerts at Walter when we were still an open attick. His trio was just looking around the corner at that time but the music they made was already very inspiring. With young drummer Gaspard Sicx and great improvisor Manolo Cabras they evolved into a warm and adventurous trio on their first album Monkeys’ Meeting, also Jordi Grognard’s first album as a (band)leader, released by Ghent based label El Negocito Records. The album consists of standards, Monk & Ornette Coleman originals and personal compositions. Generous, free-spirited and contagious music, never best expressed and performed than in a proper club!


westerhus/verbruggen - earthbound monochrome lp release
December 2021 Warped Dreamer's concert tour got reduced to a duo tour. With Jozef Dumoulin and Arve Henriksen being ill, it was only Stian Westerhus and Teun Verbruggen rocking COVID19 by the end of the tour. Limited artistic crew, limited tour, limited audiences in December 21? Time to release a limited edition vinyl of the recording Dieter Claeys made of the duo concert at Walter! Artwork is Ante Timmermans', lay out by dear Walter supporter Onno Hesselink.

It was a matter of time, really, for Teun Verbruggen and Stian Westerhus to come up with a duo recording. As 50% of the Belgian-Norwegian space travel project Warped Dreamer, they have already forged a consistently challenging musical re/invention. Together with Jozef Dumoulin and Arve Henriksen, they create extended soundscapes that introduce you to a post-industrial world with an almost frightening intensity. Combining the cerebral with the visceral, it’s a bold exercise in 21st century exploration.

Like the music of Warped Dreamer, Earthbound Monochrome is rooted in the avant-garde and improvisation scenes these two musicians are crucial parts of. Brought together, they create new worlds that are temporary but also filled with enough detail and depth to create a timeless sense of wonder and excitement.

19.30 uur:
Aziza is het gelijknamige project van de zangeres-bassiste. Haar achtergrond en haar Tsjechisch-Belgische mix worden weerspiegeld in haar muziek. Het is soulvolle muziek met veel invloeden. Dit wordt samengebracht door repetitieve zang, baslijnen en Aziza's zang.
Promenade Nocturne #1 is een onderzoek in beweging en geluid van Aziza dat draait om dood en leven, van niets tot overvloed. In dit stuk onderzoekt Aziza onze mentale gevangenissen en de grenzen van ons innerlijk. Ze vertrekt uit de idee om cycli te transmuteren door middel van dans en muziek.

20:00 uur:
Usea is een Belgische-Congolese artiest uit Brussel. Hij is auteur, componist en performer. Hij haalt inspiratie bij artiesten zoals Kanye West, Bon Iver, James Blake of Frank Ocean. Daarnaast put hij zijn creativiteit uit ervaringen met zijn dichte entourage. Zijn laatste project is “Hopium.” Een EP met een alternatieve R&B sound en die thema’s aankaart zoals vrijheid, mentale gezondheid en liefde.

21:00 uur:
Dypsa & The Terrence York Experience is een uitdaging voor je zintuigen. Trek je sloefkes aan en laat je meeslepen naar een universum waar de zwaarte van het bestaan even niet meer tastbaar is. Tussen clever woordspelen en clean punchlines slingert Dypsa zijn flows op de zweverige instrumentals van Terrence York.
